The Munster Agricultural Society (MAS) has launched a new Native Tree Arboretum and Hedgerow Trail on the Cork Show Grounds, an ambitious biodiversity and education project developed in close collaboration with researchers from University College Cork’s (UCC) School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences.
This initiative aims to strengthen local biodiversity by planting species that have long shaped Ireland’s natural and agricultural landscape. The Native Tree Arboretum and Hedgerow Trail will serve as a living library of Ireland’s native trees, featuring a collection of tree species alongside 200 meters of newly established native hedgerow. Species such as Oak, Whitethorn, Birch, Rowan, Scots Pine, Spindle and Holly have been planted to enhance habitat connectivity and ecological value across the site while also celebrating the cultural significance of Ireland’s native flora.
Building on the existing MAS–UCC grassland and biodiversity demonstration site at the Cork Show Grounds, the new Arboretum and Hedgerow Trail will expand opportunities for hands‑on learning with students, farmers, and the wider public. It will serve as an outdoor classroom supporting educational activities, particularly within UCC’s Agricultural Science Programme, on farmland biodiversity, sustainable agriculture, and land management.
“Trees play an integral role in our farming landscape, providing nourishment, shelter, and inspiration for wildlife and humans alike,” said Dr. Aoife Leader, Munster Agricultural Society Researcher in Farmland Biodiversity at UCC. “With the Native Tree Arboretum and Hedgerow Trail on the Cork Show Grounds, we have a valuable new resource to connect people with nature and educate them on the essential role these trees play in sustaining our environment.”
The creation of the Native Tree Arboretum and Hedgerow Trail reflects the strong, ongoing partnership between MAS and UCC’s Agricultural Science Programme. Together, demonstrating a shared commitment to sustainability, environmental education, and the future for Irish agriculture.
“Munster Agricultural Society is very proud of the Arboretum and Hedgerow initiative, which will enhance our Showgrounds and support local biodiversity,” said Gerard Murphy Volunteer Chairperson on behalf of the Munster Agriculturical Society. “As these trees take root, they symbolise the enduring legacy of the Society honouring our history while creating a resource that will benefit generations to come.”
