A Special General Meeting of the Members of the Society, held at the Clarence Hall, Imperial Hotel, Pembroke St., Cork, on Saturday, 19th February, 1938, the President (Mr. E.J. Clarke) in the chair, and  there was a large number of Members present.

The Scrutineers then declared the  following elected :-

Ald. Wm. Desmond and Mr. Michael Twomey.

 

A SPECIAL                                        A Special General Meeting of the Members of

GENERAL MEETING               the Society, held at the Clarence Hall, Imperial Hotel, Pembroke St., Cork, on Saturday, 19th February, 1938, the President (Mr. E.J. Clarke) in the chair, and  there was a large number of Members present.

 

                                                The Secretary read the  notice convening the Meeting, and the Chairman proposed that the following be the procedure:-

 

  To read notice from Mr. Wilfred Browne, Returning Officer for Seanad Eireann, informing the Society that they had been selected as a Nominating Body for two representatives on the Agricultural Panel for  Seanad Eireann.

 

Procedure.                 The President, continuing, said that all nominations be received up to but not later than 2-30 p.m. and that immediately the time was up for nominations, he would then call on the Secretary to have the Ballot Papers prepared, and that, as to the Election, itself, this would be carried out on the same lines as at the Annual General Meeting of the Society, that is – “the Ballot Paper contains a list of the  Candidates, and that each Member puts on the left hand side of the Ballot Paper a cross, or 1 and 2, as the case may be, opposite the two Candidates for whom he wished to vote, and that the two such Candidates receiving  the highest number for votes be selected as the Society’s Nominees for the Senate, also that where a Member voted for more than two Candidates, or a Ballot Paper  would be declared void by the Scrutineers and, that in the event of a tie between two Candidates for second place, lots  should be drawn at the Meeting to decide who the second Candidate would be.

 

This was seconded by Mr. O’ Sullivan and passed unanimously.

 

The following were then proposed for lthe two vacancies, as the Society’s Nominees:-

 

Two Vacancies as               Nicholas Fitzgerald,  (proposed by Mr. T. O’Sullivan &

Socy’s Nominees                                                            seconded by Mr. M. Ryan).

Ald. W. Desmond      (proposed by Mr. N. Hayes &

                                      seconded by Mr. Jas. Crosbie)

Ml. Twomey (proposed by Mr. D. Cronin & seconded

by Mr. J Donovan)

Miss G. Montgomery (proposed by Mr. E. O’Mahony,

B.L. & seconded by Mr. P.J. Good).

J.B. Barrett, (proposed by. E.J. Cussen & seconded by

 Mr. J. Lehane).

 

Scrutineers.                         The following ere appointed Scrutineers:-

Messrs J. McGrath, A.H. Good, M.A. and John Murphy, and, on the motion of Mr. M. Twomey, seconded by Mr. Ml. Ryan, it was decided that the President should preside at the Poll.

 

On the motion of Mr. N. Hayes, seconded by Mr. Ml.. Ryan, the following resolution was passed:-

“That we, the members of the Munster Agricultural Society, in special General Meeting assembled, do hereby authorise our President (Mr. E.J. Clarke) and our Secretary (Mr. J. Byrne) to sign on……….

Michael Twomey, Woodfield, Coachford. (proposed  by Mr. Daniel Cronin and seconded by Mr. J. Donovan).

 

Miss G. Montgomery, Broom Hill, Mitchelstown. (proposed by Mr. E. O’Mahony, B.L., and seconded by Mr. P.J. Good).

 

SCRUTINEERS                      John B. Barrett, Boxtown, Kilbrittain. (proposed by Mr. E.J. Cussen and seconded by Mr. J. Lohane).

 

The President, Mr. E.J. Clarke, stated that the next business was to appoint four Scrutineers.  The following ere proposed and seconded:-

 

            Messrs J. O’Regan, D. Forde-Nagle, J. Bird,

                          J. McGrath, A.H. Good and J. Murphy.

 

            Lots having been drawn, Messrs O’ Regan, McGrath, A.H. Good and J. Murphy were appointed the Scrutineers.

 

On the motion of Mr. Matt Twomey, seconded by Mr. M. Ryan, it was further stated that the President should preside at the Ballot.

 


The ballot having been announced by the President, as follows:-

 

CANDIDATES FOR               Ald. W. Desmond   - 108 votes;  M.L. Twomey – 50 votes

ELECTION ON                      John B. Barrett        -   49  votes;  N. Fitzgerald  -  28    “

AGRICULTURAL PANEL     Miss Montgomery -    26    “       

 

Ald. W. Desmond and Mr. M. Twomey having received the largest number of votes, they were declared the Society’s nominees by the President, Mr. E.J. Clarke.

 

On the motion of Mr. N. Hayes, seconded by Mr. Ml. Ryan, the following resolution was unanimously passed:-

 

RESOLUTION                       “ That we, the Members of the Munster Agricultural Society, in special General Meeting assembled, do hereby authorize our President (Mr. E.J. Clarke) and our Secretary (Mr. J. Byrne) to sign on behalf of the Munster Agricultural Society the prescribed nomination paper under the Seanad Electoral (Panel Members) Act, 1937, setting out the persons nominated by the Society under the said Act”.
