The Minutes of the last Meeting were read and signed.

REPRESENTATIVE –            The Secretary of the Department of Agriculture wrote:-

LIVE STOCK                          “Adverting to the Department’s letter of June 18th last

CONSULTATIVE                   regarding the proposal of the Minister for Agriculture

COUNCIL                               to renominate your Society’s representative, Mr. E.J. Clarke, Aghamarta Castle, Carrigaline, as  a Member of the Live Stock Consultative Council for a further period of two years, commencing from October 17th next, I have to request that the Secretary of the Munster Agricultural Society will inform the Department whether the Society agreed with the Minister’s proposal”.

On the motion of Ald. W. Desmond, seconded by Mr. P. Crowley, the proposal was unanimously agreed to.

Mr. E. Corcoran, Secretary of County Committee of Agriculture, wrote:-

My Committee have under consideration representations that have been made for the extension of the area for the registration of stallions of the Clydesdale and  shire breeds.  At present they cannot be registered under the Department’s Horse Breeding Scheme outside a radius of ten mils from the city.  With a view to obtaining all possible information

LETTER FROM MR.            in the matter my Committee desire me to submit to

CORCORAN                           you for the consideration of your Society the enclosed questionnaire, and I would be glad if you would kindly put it before them with as little delay as possible.”

                                                The questions asked were:

In your opinion, is there a demand amongst Merchants, haulage contractors, tillage farmers, and other such people for the heavy type of horses suitable for carting and heavy farm work?

Can that demand be supplied from the stocks that are now available as evidenced at the fairs or horse marts?

Does the type of horse known as the Irish Draught horses suit that demand?

Do you think that the breeding of heavy horses from the shire or Clydesdale stallion would be justified by demand and prices to be obtained?

After  discussing the matter, it was decided that the first question be answered in the affirmative, the second  and third in the negative, and the fourth in the affirmative.

TEN MILE RADIUS              It was further  agreed, on the suggestion of Mr. Cussen, that a request be made for the removal of the ten mile radius restriction.

SUGGESTION RE                 Mr. Cussen suggested that it would be a good thing for

LECTURE                               the Society if lectures under its auspices were given during the Winter months for its members, also the public wishing to attend, and, after discussing the matter, the Meeting decided to refer this to the Sub-Committee, This was seconded by Ald. W. Desmond.

VOTE OF CONDOLENCE    On the proposition of Mr. Cussen, seconded by Mr.  O’Regan, a vote of condolence was passed to Mr. Jas. Donovan on the death of his wife, and the Secretary.
